Emilia: A Journey Through Time

  • 1930 – 1940
Originally designed in 1929 for the Twelve Metre Int. Rule, Emilia was a gift from Senator Giovanni Agnelli to his son-in-law, Carlo Nasi. Unfortunately, Nasi’s unexpected departure to South America delayed her construction, and she was sold to Attilio Bruzzone, a prominent member of the Royal Yacht Club Italiano, before her launch. The rig was modified to a Bermudan schooner, and the initial sail number (I 1) was reassigned to another Italian Twelve, La SpinaEmilia, named after Bruzzone’s wife, launched on September 16, 1930. During the 1930s, she competed in various regattas between Genoa and Cannes.
  • 1941 – 1975
Owned by E. Coppola, a well-known banker, Emilia continued her journey with home ports in Genoa, Portofino (Italy), and Cap Ferrat (France). However, she ceased racing during this period.
  • 1975 – 1988
Giorgio Trani took the helm, docked in Venice (Italy). In 1988, Adriana Sterzi became her steward, based in La Spezia (Italy). During this time, she underwent a complete refit at Beconcini Shipyard, with the interior redesigned in a modern style by renowned architect Pinto. Emilia was relaunched on July 28, 1990.
  • 1998 – 2014
Marco Riccardo Gastaldi and Jacques Sicotte acquired Emilia, with her home port transitioning from Genoa to Cannes, and later to Alassio (Italy). In 2002, they decided to revert her to Attilio Costaguta’s original Twelve Metre design, despite her previous conversion to a staysail schooner before launching. Jacques Fauroux designed the new sail plan, and a wooden mast was supplied by Lavazza yard. The hull conversion was personally managed by the owner, with assistance from Pasqui yard in Antibes. The engine was removed, and while the interiors remain unfinished, Emilia currently participates in Mediterranean regattas for the Twelve Metre class and classic yachts.
