KUSCH YACHTS 101
I DYNASTY: Pushing Boundaries in Yacht Design
When it comes to creating one of the most complex yachts ever built, Richard Hein, founder of Monaco’s The A Group, didn’t just raise the bar—he rebuilt it entirely. The result is I Dynasty, a 101-metre marvel that’s as stunning as it is sophisticated, thanks to a relentless pursuit of style, safety, and innovation.
Hein’s journey began with a client determined to cruise with more than 12 guests—meaning the yacht had to comply with the new, evolving Passenger Yacht Code (PYC). While this promised design flexibility, it also meant navigating a maze of strict safety and material regulations. Undeterred, Hein and his team made I Dynasty the first yacht delivered to full PYC certification, setting a new industry standard.
Hein’s expertise runs deep. After leading Dutch yard Oceanco and developing a passion for Japanese shipbuilding, he launched VegaYachts in Tokyo. The original plan for an 86-metre build in Japan was derailed by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, but the client’s ambitions only grew. Hein was tasked not just with design, but with delivering a turnkey project—expanded to 101 metres, complete with interiors by Studio Massari.
The owner wanted a multi-generational yacht: robust, maneuverable, efficient, and packed with pools and water access. Hein’s team delivered, but PYC rules dictated every detail, from insulation and fire-resistant materials to escape routes and construction methods. Every interior space had to meet strict combustion standards, requiring constant collaboration between designers, engineers, and the shipyard.
Creativity flourished under constraint. Traditional mahogany details were recreated using non-combustible plaster and faux finishes. Leather, not fabric, became the material of choice for wall panels. The interiors, designed by Alessandro Massari, blend contemporary glasswork with classic motifs and floral themes. Warm woods, intricate marquetry, and a show-stopping five-metre Murano chandelier set the tone. The main saloon is a multifunctional hub, seamlessly connected to the upper saloon by an open staircase—a true “heart of the yacht.”
The “wow” factor peaks in the stone foyer, where Michelangelo-inspired marblework surrounds a glass elevator. Gold leaf and rare marbles add luxury, while each cabin is a unique retreat, featuring backlit 3D oyster shell headboards and Italian-inspired design.
Outdoor spaces are equally inviting: dining areas, sundecks, a covered cinema, and a float-in tender garage that doubles as a salt-water pool. Behind the scenes, Hein dedicated ample space to machinery, crew quarters, and storage, ensuring smooth operations for a 32-strong crew.
Engineering excellence drives I Dynasty. Built entirely in steel for strength and durability, the yacht features a Rolls-Royce diesel-electric powerplant that matches power generation to demand, minimizing fuel use and emissions. Advanced particulate filters keep air clean at anchor or in port, while a dynamic power management system ensures seamless operation.
The wheelhouse, designed with Rolls-Royce, feels straight out of Star Trek—high-tech helm chairs, customizable controls, and full dynamic positioning for precise maneuvering. The tender garage transforms into a pool deck, with ingenious engineering to keep water calm and children safe.
Visually, I Dynasty stands out with sleek lines, expansive decks, and signature glass “shark fins” that blend form and function. Hidden glass doors and windows make outdoor living comfortable in any weather.
Yet, navigating PYC requirements wasn’t without its challenges. More crew, extra escape routes, and new material standards pushed the limits of yacht design. Hein and his team responded with adaptability and innovation, proving that “designing to build” is more than a motto—it’s a commitment to excellence.
Three and a half years later, I Dynasty is more than a spectacular yacht; it’s a testament to what’s possible when ambition meets expertise. For buyers, sellers, and charterers seeking something truly extraordinary, I Dynasty sets the standard—where complexity meets comfort, and every detail is crafted for unforgettable journeys at sea.
