The original owner of PELORUS, a Saudi businessman, initially intended to extend his existing 72-meter motor yacht. However, upon consulting with designer Tim Heywood, it became clear that a more satisfactory option would be to create an entirely new yacht, resulting in the impressive 85-meter vessel. As the project progressed, additional features were incorporated, ultimately leading to a remarkable overall length of 114.5 meters, securing its position as the 11th largest yacht in the world at that time. PELORUS is unmistakably a powerhouse in every technical aspect. With two robust 3,900kW Wärtsilä V12 engines that could easily propel a car ferry, and four 465kVA alternators capable of illuminating a small town, she’s definitely not your average vessel. The immense scale of Pelorus allows Heywood to incorporate incredible features, including a top-deck lido boasting two luxurious swimming pools and a sprawling sea-level platform that emerges when the transom is opened. Additionally, the yacht boasts two helicopter pads, and its hull side is equipped with large doors that unveil a spacious tender deck housing an impressive array of small boats. The owner’s suite offers an unparalleled horizon-to-horizon view and features a private deck, ensuring exclusive privacy. Additionally, one of the guest suites showcases a remarkable use of opening platforms, with an entire wall that lowers to create a charming verandah, exemplifying the vessel’s innovative design.
Terence Disdale took on the immense task of designing the interior, aiming to create an informal beach house atmosphere using natural materials wherever possible. To achieve this, many cabins feature ‘distressed planking’ floorboards, specially made from new materials to evoke a casual, laid-back vibe. Despite the challenges of maintaining a casual atmosphere in a large and sophisticated yacht, Disdale’s informal style of extreme luxury was brilliantly successful.
